Online typing test — measure your WPM and accuracy
About the typing test
A free, no-sign-up typing speed test. Pick a length (1, 3, or 5 minutes), start typing when you’re ready, and the test times itself. You see your words-per-minute, accuracy, and error list the moment the timer stops.
The paragraphs come from a rotating library of readable English — not random letters — so the test measures how fast you actually type, not how well you cope with gibberish. For employer-grade proof, upgrade to Premium or buy a one-off verified certificate: it ships as a QR-scannable PDF that anyone can check against our issuing database at beatype.co.uk/verify.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good WPM?
- 40 WPM is comfortable for everyday typing. 60 WPM is fast; above 80 WPM is office-work professional. Court reporters and competitive typists reach 120+ WPM.
- Do I need an account to take the test?
- No. The test, the WPM score, and the accuracy breakdown are free and need no sign-in on BEA Type. You only need an account if you want to save your history or claim a verified certificate.
- How is WPM calculated?
- Standard 5-character word counting: every 5 characters you type correctly counts as one word. Errors subtract from your net WPM, so accuracy and raw speed both affect the score.
- Is the certificate shareable with employers?
- Yes. Each certificate has a public verification URL and a QR code that anyone can scan. Employers see the exact WPM, accuracy, and issue date, straight from our issuing database — no PDF-editing fakes.
